Went to the Rockies game this afternoon, a 4-2 Giants win.
Jamie Moyer pitched well for the Rockies and kept his team in the game. I was hoping he could get the win since he would become the oldest pitcher, at 49, to ever win a big league game. But his defense didn't help.
A Chris Nelson throwing error in the first inning extended Moyer's pitch count although San Fran didn't score in the frame.
The play that irritates me, and led to two unearned runs, was a dropped fly ball in centerfield by Dexter Fowler. Instead of sprinting to right center and camping under the ball and catching it with two hands, Fowler cadillacked his way over to the ball. He sauntered over and casually reached for the ball with one hand. It hit off the thumb of his glove and fell to the ground. The crowd booed Fowler and justifiably so.
In the post-game press conference, Colorado Manager Jim Tracy talked about how you can't give a team 4 outs and such. But he didn't throw Fowler under the bus. He talked about how Fowler will win several games this year with his glove and that kind of soft stuff. I think if Tracy would have ripped Fowler it would have been out of character for the manager but maybe a message would be sent that Fowler would need to hear.
Now in his 4th full season and at the age of 26, I don't see improvement in his game at all. Actually, I think he's regressed somewhat. He looks content to be what he currently is...a .260 hitter who will hit a handful of homers, knock in about 40 runs, steal very few bases for a guy with his speed and play pretty good defense...when he wants to. Today he didn't want to.
If I'm the Rockies, I'm sniffing around for a trade. Anybody want a centerfielder for a third baseman?
