Baseball Heaven
Sometimes I'll crack on Fenway Park, mainly to annoy Red Sox fans. But the place is amazing.
Today they are celebrating 100-years of the ballpark and it is incredible that they are still playing ball there. The first game 100 years ago today had Boston beating the New York Highlanders 7-6.
I don't know how many players appreciate the history of the yard but if I had a chance to play there, I would think of all the great players who preceded me. When I stepped into the batter's box, I'm sure I would be thinking, "Ted Williams stood here. Babe Ruth, Carl Yastrzemski, Wade Boggs and all the rest too." It would be powerful for sure.
The sun is shinining on a nice warm Friday in Boston. The shadows are cascading across the field, reminiscent of the playoff game in 1978.
The Yanks and Sox are wearing throwback uniforms dating to 1912. The Yankees unis look nice. There is an interlocking NY on the left part of the chest instead of familiar "NEW YORK." All the players are wearing their socks high. The Yanks are wearing grey caps with an interlocking NY.
The Red Sox look spectacular. They are wearing plain white caps, white jersey's with a bold red "RED SOX" across the front. Their white socks have a red stripe near the knee. It simply looks magnificent. They should permanently change their uniforms to what they are wearing today.
Of course, if they really wanted an authentic throwback look and experience, they would make the players wear wool uniforms and not wear batting helmets. Oh, and the men would have to wear suits and bowler hats in order to gain admittance and the women would have to wear long dresses with sweaters and flowery hats.
Anyway, if there is one place I'd rather be today than beautiful Denver, Colorado it would be Fenway Park. Truly, heaven on earth.
I also hope the Yankees win to spoil the Red Sox day and celebration!
(Update...Yanks won 6-2. Sweet.)
