Rockies pitcher Juan Nicasio has had a great spring so far. Today was his third outing and he gave up his first runs of the Cactus League.
He's throwing the ball well and looks great on the hill. You would never have thought that he almost died on the Coors Field mound last year after getting drilled in the head by a line drive. I'll never forget that night since it was the most frightening thing I've ever seen at a ballgame on any level.
Again, the Rockies training staff did an awesome job that night in attending to him and immobilizing him.
I was near the bullpen today following Nicasio's stint against the Angels (5 IP, 4 K's, 1 BB, and a 3-run homer to Howie Kendrick) and he was signing a couple of autographs before heading into the clubhouse. As he bent down to sign a ball, I noticed a nice, 4-inch or so, vertical scar where they operated on his broken neck last season.
I've always liked scars. They tell a story and I feel are character builders. I like people who have scars. Sudden thought! Does the word "scar" come from "scary"? Since many scars come when something scary happens.
Anyway, if scars are character builders then Juan Nicasio has a ton of character. Just give him the comeback player of the year award now. Plus, he's going to have a great year. He can throw the ball through a brick wall and his command is there. I expect a big year from Nicasio in 2012.
