I was perusing www.baseball-reference.com this morning and was looking up Stan Hack who played for the Cubs his entire 16 year career, beginning in 1932. He was a lifetime .301 hitter with 2,193 total hits. An excellent career, obviously.
Here's what I don't get. He wore, in order, uniform numbers 1, 31, 49, 34, 39, 6, 20 and 25. What if the Cubs wanted to retire his number? Do they retire all of them? One of them?
Baseball players tend to be superstitious especially concerning their uniform number. It is apparent that Hack didn't care which uniform number he had, just so long he had a uniform.
By the way, Hack had a good nickname. Smiling Stan.
