The Rays of course were originally called the Devil Rays. The then decided to call themselves simply the Rays. Maybe they wanted to get rid of any satanic connotations.
As the Rays, Tampa Bay has been a pretty darn good ball club, even going to the World Series in 2008 before falling to the Phillies. Last year, Tampa Bay won the American League East with a payroll of slightly more than 23-thousand dollars while the Yankees and their 794-billion dollar payroll came in second and snared the wild card.
As the Devil Rays, Tampa Bay had some pretty hideous seasons.
Well, this season, so far, Tampa Bay is playing like the Devil Rays and not the Rays. They are 1-8 after losing today to the White Sox, the worst start in franchise history which dates all the way back to 1998.
By the way, who broadcast the first professional game in Tampa Bay franchise history? That would be me, in 1996.
